The 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X AEV is an Off-Road Beast

In the American West, heavy-duty pickup trucks are a common sight and often used for towing horse trailers, farm equipment, and camping trailers up and down mountains and through rough terrain found in national forests and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land. While all pickups feel at home out West, larger rigs are more suitable.
GMC recently unveiled the latest additions to their premium off-roader AT4X AEV lineup, which include the Canyon AT4X AEV, the diesel-powered version of the Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV, and the new Sierra 2500 AT4X AEV. To showcase these vehicles, the American automaker flew a group of journalists to Montana, where they could test drive the Canyon and the Sierra 1500 on various surfaces, including highways, dirt roads, and off-road trails. A few journalists spent quality time with the Sierra 2500 AEV on a 30-minute drive loop trail on Big Sky country’s ranch.
So, let’s dive into the specs: the Sierra 2500 AT4X AEV boasts 11.7 inches of ground clearance, a breakover angle of 22.6 degrees, a departure angle of 22.7 degrees, and an approach angle of 29.6 degrees. While these numbers may not seem as impressive as those of the Ford Bronco Raptor, they’re still more than sufficient for most purposes. During the test drive, the journalist drove over Cretaceous-era rocks, and the vehicle performed exceptionally well. Further, with the AEV package, the Sierra 2500 HD AT4X AEV comes equipped with boron steel contact plates to protect the vehicle’s sensitive components from damage caused by contact with the ground.
The test vehicle featured the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 engine, which delivers an impressive 470 horsepower and a massive 975 lb-ft of torque. The latter figure, along with the advantages of turbocharging, makes it less affected by altitude, making it an ideal choice for HD buyers who plan on towing heavy loads, particularly in areas with high altitudes, such as Colorado and California.
The interior of the Sierra 2500 HD AT4X is spacious and comfortable. Despite the black-on-black “Obsidian Rush” colorway, the interior is durable and can withstand years of use. Heavy-duty pickups are known for their longevity, so this is no surprise.
The Sierra 2500 HD AT4X offers ample space with over 40 inches of headroom and legroom and over 60 inches of hip and shoulder space in every seat. The front seats feature refined bolsters, cushioning, heating, ventilation, and massage features. Anyone smaller than Andre the Giant shouldn’t have any complaints about the vehicle’s spaciousness.
The Sierra 2500 HD AT4X features a fast-responding Google-based infotainment system that is becoming increasingly common in GMC trucks. The Heavy Duty GMC also features a 13.4-inch touchscreen and built-in Google Maps. However, enthusiasts who work in cold weather and frequently get in and out of the cabin will appreciate that essential controls such as climate and volume are still physical buttons. The driving controls, including the column shift lever, are also physical, which is a nice touch for those who prefer the traditional feel of a truck.
